About
Hi there! I’m Alyssa, and I’m a storyteller, journalist, editor, and copywriter based in San Francisco.
I didn’t always know I wanted to be writer, so I started my career in a field I loved: music. In my late teens, I answered phone calls from rappers like Killer Mike, Mistah F.A.B. and Keak da Sneak while coding a website for an indie hip-hop record label.
Not long after, I landed on the East Coast to study all things politics and performance at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Living in Lower Manhattan, I managed to convince the editors at the nearby SPIN Magazine to teach me their writerly ways and let me interview a few bands too.
When I returned to San Francisco after school, I deployed my newfound arsenal of adjectives and adverbs for public relations purposes, penning press releases, product specs, and pitches for a variety of activewear and outdoor clients.
I kept at writing, though for a different audience: academia. I flew to France to present a paper for the French Journal of Popular Music (my second academic presentation after this one).
After that, I decided to write full-time, working for Radio.com and CBS San Francisco.
These days, I host a podcast about beer for Good Beer Hunting, but mainly, I create pop culture, food, and business content for the San Francisco Chronicle’s SFGATE, one of the largest news websites in the United States.
